Michigan Wolf Population Out-of-Control
Wolves chasing deer through backyards in the middle of the day. Wolves captured on camera running by a local elementary school. A human-wolf encounter while running in the park.
These are all undeniable signs that the wolf population in Michigan is out-of-control.
Latest estimates by the Michigan DNR project the wolf population at 700. But we both know this is a minimum estimate based on searching roads and trails for wolf tracks. The reality is there are likely significantly more wolves than the estimated minimum population.
Still, the minimum estimate of 700 wolves is nearly four times Michigan’s goal of a sustainable population goal of 200 wolves.
There is no question the state needs responsible wolf management.
But the Michigan DNR says it’ll take until at least next June to update the state’s 2015 wolf management plan and hold a public opinion survey before they organize a hunt. This is completely unnecessary and a stalling tactic to allow litigation by radical anti-hunting groups such as Defenders of Wildlife and the Sierra Club to play out, as they have vowed to sue and use all legal maneuvers necessary to block the delisting of the gray wolf. The present wolf management plan in effect can be utilized this year until a new plan can be developed.
Seeing the undeniable need for responsible wolf management, State Senator Ed McBroom introduced a resolution urging the state to authorize wolf hunting and trapping this year. The good news is, the resolution passed this week.
Does this mean there will be a wolf hunt in Michigan this year? Not yet.
The resolution urging the Natural Resources Commission to authorize the Department of Natural Resources to organize a wolf hunt in 2021 is now in the State House and must be passed by State Representatives.
Hunters across Michigan, it’s time to stand up and demand a wolf hunt be held in Michigan this year!
Find your state representative below and urge them to take immediate action to manage the state’s wolf population.
Tell them your personal story, tell them how you and your family have been impacted, or use our sample script below.
With a population nearly 4 times the viable population goal and Michigan residents experiencing increased attacks on livestock, family pet attacks and middle of the day sightings, the state must act now to manage its resources and protect the livelihood of its residents.
