Fall is in the air and hunters everywhere are tuning up bows, crossbows, rifles, shotguns and other gear. I have been practicing my shooting skills for a public land mule deer hunt this fall where the country is rugged and the shots can be long.  I am also looking forward to pursuing elk, pheasant, and waterfowl with my son and extended family members. This is an outdoor tradition that in our family is being passed down from fathers to sons and daughters.

We encourage multi-generational hunting traditions and introducing new hunters to our sport and to our commitment to wildlife conservation. Hunting is a long-standing personal and family activity and is part of our traditional American values of family, conservation, self-reliance and rugged individualism.  Teddy Roosevelt said, “Hardy outdoor sports like hunting, are in themselves of no small value to the National character and should be encouraged in every way. Men who go into the wilderness, indeed, men who take part in any field sport with horse or rifle, receive a benefit which can hardly be given by even the most vigorous athletic games.” This says a lot about hunting and the character building benefits it can have for sportsmen who engage in ethical hunting.  It also clearly identifies hunting and hunters as core to our Nation’s character.

Many hunters take our sport and lifestyle for granted and assume it will always be available to them and their posterity. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hunting is under attack and hunters are being portrayed as ruthless, heartless killers.
